Young Entrepreneur Opens Up One of the Only Black-Owned Nail Salons in Chicago
For women, trips to the nail salon are seen as a beauty ritual and place of relaxation. This is exactly what Tips 312’s owner, Meghan Young, had in mind when she opened the nail salon this year.
Tips 312 is one of the only Black-owned nail salons in Chicago. Young says she wants to cater the experience of the nail shop to Black women.
“I wanted to make sure it was something specifically for Black women,” Young said. “All the art is Black hands and Black feet and just makes you feel comfortable.”
Since opening earlier this year, Tips 312 has built a solid clientele, which Young attributed to the salon’s social media presence and the work of its nail technicians.
Most of the nail technicians at Tips 312 are women of color. Young says she made this decision after seeing how underrepresented Black nail technicians were at local salons.
“If you go to any salon, you’re not going to see Black women. And if you do, there’s only one and they’re not always supported in that space,” Young said. “So I wanted to create a space where Black nail techs felt comfortable just walking in the door.”
Young is also providing two scholarships for aspiring nail technicians to get their licenses, which on average can cost over $3,000.
Young hopes to expand her nail salon business to other states in the near future and eventually open a Tips nail salon in Paris.
