Will African American celebrities ever own a sports league?

Will African American celebrities ever own a sports league?

Today’s question for today is a follow-up to last night’s Dr Boyce Book Club meeting, in which we analyzed the book, “Black Labor, White Wealth” by Dr Claud Anderson. The billion dollar question is this: With $1.4 trillion in economic power, why don’t black people own a sports league?

With all of the conversation surrounding the NFL’s decision to get rid of Colin Kaepernick, it was fascinating how so many of us were caught up in what was pretty much a labor dispute. Rather than begging the NFL to open their doors to black people, perhaps it might make more economic sense to support existing sports leagues that are owned and controlled by the black community.

What Deion Sanders is doing to single handedly increase the economic value of HBCUs is a powerful case-in-point. So, let’s go down memory lane and pay attention to what generational wealth looks like. Let’s talk about the values of NFL franchises, and how much they cost to create in the first place. That will help us understand where we stand economically.
