J.D. Garnier Sr. has been in wealth management for 20 years. Starting out with no connections, no relationships, and no idea how to grow a business, he often struggled with the doubt and insecurity of being in an industry where no one looked like him. The Financial Services has struggled with diversity since its inception and to this day African-Americans make up less than 3% of all Financial Advisors. In addition, it was just as difficult to forge business relationships with clients that were different from him whether by race, age or culture. None of the hundreds of hours sales training he attended addressed how to build client relationships that transcended societal differences.
Despite these challenges, J.D. not only overcame, but thrived in the industry, eventually advising clients worth millions and dealing with complex and specialized issues. He now works with clients of all ages, races, and cultures. He used the lessons he learned to write his first book, ‘How to Sell When your Client’s don’t Look Like You; A Minority’s Guide to Success in Sales.’
In his book, he outlined each step in the sales process from the unique perspective of someone trying to do business with people they shared no visible connection with. The principles in his book formed the basis of Diversity Selling, A New Era Sales Training meant to help other minority sales professionals thrive in the same manner.
J.D. Garnier Sr. received the Houston Business Journal’s Top 40 under 40 award, and the 2018 Top 50 Black Professionals & Entrepreneurs award. He has spoken all over the country on topics including Diversity, Business Development & Sales Training, Personal Empowerment and Finding Purpose as well as a number of topics.
