Virtual talk: Cornwall and the African Diaspora

The maritime history of Cornwall still remains a relatively overlooked aspect of scholarship, despite offering key evidence that communities were in fact more diverse than has often been imagined. Dr Richard Anderson will be discussing how maritime history, churches and church records have much to reveal about the African diaspora.

Richard is a historian of Africa and the African Diaspora, with particular emphasis on British abolitionism and colonialism in West Africa. Currently a lecturer in colonial and post-colonial history at the University of Exeter’s Cornwall campus, Richard was previously a Commonwealth Rutherford Fellow in the School of History, Politics and International Relations at the University of Leicester and a SSHRC Postdoctoral Fellow at the Harriet Tubman Institute for Research on Africa and its Diasporas, York University (Toronto, Canada).
