Tour African American Historical Treasures On Display At City Hall With Houston's Angela Gaddis

Angela Gaddis is an administrative specialist with the City of Houston Controller’s office. For the last three years she has brought her passion to City Hall and put it on display for everyone to see in the rotunda during Black History Month. The exhibit includes books, photographs and figurines from her personal collection that she wanted to showcase. You might recognize some famous athletes like Venus and Serena as well as native Houstonians Simone Biles and famous boxer, Reggie “Sweet” Jackson.

Gaddis said she began the displays back in 2018, starting with books she collected and shared with a few of her staff members. She also provided an exhibit during Black History Month for Harris County at the Edith Fae Cook Branch Library in 2020.
“Regarding the black perspective, I was invited to participate in the 2018 Black History program for the Controller’s Office,’ she said.

Black History Month is an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing their central role in U.S. history. Also known as African American History Month, the event was the brainchild of noted historian Carter G. Woodson and other prominent African Americans. Since 1976, every U.S. president has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month. Other countries around the world, including Canada and the United Kingdom, also devote a month to celebrating Black history.
