Tavis Smiley continues Tony Bennett tribute and talks about slavery “benefiting” Black people

In part two of Tavis Smiley’s homage to the iconic vocalist Tony Bennett, we reprise a heartfelt discussion between Tavis and Tony in 2017, shortly after the esteemed singer commemorated his 90th birthday.

The legendary singer passed away last Friday at the age of 96.

On the back half:
Did slavery benefit Black people? Florida Gov. and GOP presidential candidate Ron DeSantis seems to think so. He has been making headlines for defending his state’s new approved African American studies curriculum that teaches about the “personal benefit” of slavery.

Florida’s Department of Education approved their new history standards just last Wednesday to the displeasure of many civil rights leaders and scholars who say that these new lessons distort centuries of U.S. history.

Dr. Daniel Black, author and professor of African American studies at Clark Atlanta University, joins Tavis to share his thoughts on the implications of flagrantly downplaying the horrific realities of slavery, and promoting troubling alternative narratives of history.
