South African diaspora need to ‘front up’ to their history

Author and commentator Dr Jamie Miller says much of the South African diaspora in Australia needs to “front up” to their history.

“I think that diaspora is really important, and will be the bedrock of a future relationship between the two countries,” Dr Miller said.

“I think the problem though, is that the relationship that the diaspora has with South Africa is going to continue to be pretty troubled until that diaspora learns, and grapples with, and fronts up to its own history.

“And there’s no sign at all that that’s happening, I should mention.”

Dr Miller said it wasn’t uncommon to hear white South Africans, when around family and friends, make positive comments about the Apartheid regime – something Dr Miller said was “ahistorical and flatly wrong”.
