For years after colonialism, many former French colonies, especially in West Africa, looked at France as a parasite, neo-colonialist state and oppressor in every respect. This alone explains why many coups are in former French colonies and are followed by anti-French protests and disdain for French policies.
Now, doubts are lingering in the West African country of Senegal since the 44-year-old pan-Africanist, Bassirou Diomaye Faye was elected and sworn in as Senegal’s youngest president, and Africa’s youngest democratically elected president. One of the prominent doubts is whether President Faye will join the leaders of Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso to form a confederation and the Sahel military alliance that are free from French and Western influence, exploitation, oppression and neo-colonialism.

The governments of Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso have made public their plans to form a confederation following their ‘exit‘ from ECOWAS. The spokesperson of the Malian government said that the diplomats from the three countries have recommended to their heads of state to create a confederation bringing together Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger.
