Seeing Ourselves: African -American Muslim Experience in Bed Stuy | #BHeard Amplified
These films exploring the history and experiences of Brooklyn’s African-American Muslim community were created by teens at the Clara Muhammad School of Masjid Khalifah, an Islamic school affiliated with Masjid Abdul Muhsi Khalifah in Bedford–Stuyvesant. The students worked with artist Farideh Sakhaeifar, a former BRIC Media Arts Fellow.
The films were made under the auspices of BRIC’s #BHeardAmplified initiative which combines the power of media and community conversations to foster engagement in important civic issues. Students were taught the basics of video storytelling and were provided with digital toolkits, mentoring, and the equipment necessary to tell their own stories, in their own voices.
This project is supported by the Doris Duke Foundation for Islamic Arts Building Bridges Program and by the Lincoln Center Cultural Innovation Fund. This Fund is generously supported by the Rockefeller Foundation and administered by Lincoln Center.
Filmmakers: Bahiyah, Razzaq, Khalid, Salih, Qadir
