Rioters in S. Africa loot and burn down LG Electronics TV Factory
남아공 폭동 확산에 군 배치…LG공장 화재
Over in South Africa.
Riots erupted after former President Jacob Zuma was jailed, prompting authorities to send in the army.
Shops are looted and buildings are burned.
Adversely affected are facilities belonging to South Korean tech firm LG and Samsung.
Seoul’s Foreign Ministry vowed to work closely with the local government to protect Korean residents and provide updates on any further damage.
Shin Ye-eun has the latest.
Police fire rubber bullets at protestors… running away after looting shops in Johannesburg, South Africa’s largest city.
South Africa deployed troops on Monday to contain the violent demonstrations.
Riots began last week,… when supporters of former President Jacob Zuma came out to the streets to protest his jailing.
Up to 30 people have been killed so far,…according to state and provincial authorities.
As rioters burned down buildings and looted shops, the owners saw their livelihoods lost.
“With all that’s happened here, how are we now going to provide for our children? I arrived and found my shop in this state, and all that I’m left with is this umbrella.”
Armed mobs also raided a factory in Durban,… belonging to the South Korean tech firm, LG Electronics.
They looted TVs and computer monitors,… and set the factory on fire.
Damage was also reported at a Samsung logistics warehouse in KwaZulu-Natal Province.
Imported goods stored in the warehouse,…were stolen.
No casualties have been reported in either place,…so far.
The Korean Embassy in South Africa asked local police to go to the site and confirm the scale of the damage.
But the Embassy said the large number of protestors appears to be making that difficult.
South Korea’s Foreign Ministry will continue to ask the South African government to protect Korean companies and the country’s 3-thousand-3 hundred Korean residents.
The Ministry will provide updates on any additional damage or casualties in the coming days.
