Putin Says Russia Is Prepared to Train Africa Militaries
Russian President Vladimir Putin courted leaders from Africa at a summit on Friday, hailing the continent’s growing role in global affairs and offering to expand political and business ties.
Speaking at the plenary session Friday, Putin noted that the situation in the African continent remains unstable and blamed the “heavy legacy of the colonial era” for this.
He noted that Moscow also stands ready to bolster defence ties with African countries by helping train their military and expanding supplies of military equipment, some of them on a no-cost basis.
Putin also hailed Africa’s role as it becomes “a new centre of power, its political and economic role is growing exponentially.”
He added that his country will continue to help ease the debt burden of African countries with Russia’s total debt write-offs reaching $23 billion.
