On Juneteenth, a Celebration of Black Excellence

Juneteenth is a holiday that commemorates the end of slavery for Black people in the United States. It’s a time for reflection and for celebration. And, for many of us, a reminder that we need to spend more time learning. Here, we share four stories on Black history and Black excellence. The first takes us to the Great Dismal Swamp in North Carolina, where self-liberated enslaved people found refuge. Then we meet a man who reenacts Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s speeches; a teacher who uses music to empower her Black students; and barbers who are having honest conversations with their clients about mental health.
