National Youth Day | SA youth perceived as disengaged from politics



According to Afrobarometer, South Africa’s youth are generally seen as disengaged from conventional forms of political participation.

Ever since high school students sparked the watershed Soweto uprisings 38 years ago, South Africans have held – often simultaneously – contradictory beliefs about young people and politics.

The youth played a key role in the liberation struggle. In South Africa, June is dedicated to the youth of 1976.

Has the time come for young people to lead South Africa? To discuss this matter further, we are joined in the studio is a Student Chapter and Youth Coordinator at Rise Mzansi and Deputy Chairperson at Equal Education Lawrence Manaka; Leela-Lind Devar, economics honours student at Wits University; and Ashley Magutshwa, named one of Mail and Guardian’s 200 Young South Africans when he was 16, accomplished ballet dancer and 3rd-year student in theatre and dance performance at UCT.
