Nation at 9: Black Bandh Politics โ Amid a Didi-RaGa proxy war, protest bandh-or-bust?
It’s week 4 of your cash strapped life. The economist Keynes warns us that at times like this, people worry about the return of capital, rather than the return on capital, but don’t get into depression pardon the pun because the netas are out there maximising their political capital.
Today from Chennai to Kolkata and Delhi to Bengaluru, the opposition decided that they are the voice of the people which wasn’t being shouted out aloud in parliament quite enough. So they were on the streets, โaakroshโ is the rubric some of them are using, but when Mamata said that she would protest, but not call for a โbandhโ the Congress tried to redefine what a โbandhโ means.
Trying to water it down there is a urgent situation in India. There is a cash crunch ATMs are closed banks are just not being able to replace the cash fast enough and the government so far just isn’t telling us when they’ll have all the notes printed.
There are going to be economic consequences, but let’s not be blindsided by the political ones. On one hand you have Congress, still soul searching on its own next generation looking to hold on to the position of opposition number 1.
On the other hand you have Mamata Banerjee who’s spotting a larger national opportunity. This is the political economy do we need it at time when the priority is just to get India back on its feet? In their attempts to be the winners, how can we ensure that we’re not the losers that’s the question tonight.
