Morgan Freeman says Black History Month and term ‘African American’ are insults

Legendary actor Morgan Freeman has opened up about his view on race relations in a rare but explosive interview with The Sunday Times’s Culture magazine. In the interview published on Saturday, April 15th, 2023, the 85-year-old Freeman, reiterated his dislike of Black History Month and tore into the term “African American,” calling them both an “insult.” Black History Month is an annual celebration in February that recognizes the contributions and achievements of Black Americans throughout history. It honours the struggles and challenges faced by Black people and acknowledges their ongoing fight for social justice and equality. By highlighting the significant role that Black individuals have played in shaping American culture, society, and politics, Black History Month aims to promote a greater understanding of the diverse experiences and perspectives of Black Americans.
But Freeman, commenting on Black History Month, told The Sunday Times: “Two things I can say publicly that I do not like: Black History Month is an insult. You’re going to relegate my history to a month?” he quizzed. Freeman made the exact point almost two decades ago in this 2005 60 Minutes interview with CBS’s Mike Wallace, when he stressed on how not talking about race might help end racism and described the annual celebration of Black History Month in the United States each February as “ridiculous” because “Black history is American history.”
