Marxism and Identity Politics: Roundtable Discussion

Join us for this roundtable with Julia Damphouse, Ashok Kumar, and Miriyam Aouragh.
Marxism and identity politics has been a vector of tension, conflict and engagement since the 1970’s. Some of these vectors – Marxist Feminism and Marxism and critical Race Studies, for example, have been prominent within contemporary debates. Some – such as Marxism and disability and until very recently marxism and sexuality – have been far less so. Particularly in the 1980’s and 1990’s, Marxism and different identity politics were seen in opposition and conflict, with identity regarded as a key feature of post-marxist and anti-marxist theory and politics. In the 21st Century, there have been critical attempts to focus on an inclusive politics of solidarity and critical theoretical vectors and intersections.

In 2018, Historical Materialism made an explicit intervention with contemporary debates in its Special Issue on Identity Politics. This panel seeks to build upon this intervention and extend discussion and debate:

The Panel

Ashok Kumar: Lecturer in International Political Economy, Birkbeck (London) and one of the editors of the Special issue on Identity Politics

Julia Damphouse: Humboldt University in Berlin and Jacobin Reading Groups Co-ordinator

Miriyam Aouragh: University of Westminster and a member of the Editorial Board of Historical Materialism.
