In US news and current events today, Sammie Rogers founded Higher Learning Institutions, a cannabis school in his hometown of Pontiac, MI. It will offer courses that teach people what it takes to work in the emerging cannabis industry.
Rogers says he’s been growing cannabis since he lived in California in 2010. He saw an industry that was dominated by rich white men and he wanted to do something to help change that.
In 2012, Rogers moved back to Michigan, which first rolled out a medical cannabis program in 2008. Michigan legalized recreational cannabis in November 2018, but Rogers says many people of color are still apprehensive about working in the industry, because of the harms caused by the racist war on drugs. But he says there’s no better time to get into the game.
Higher Learning Institutions received a $100k business accelerator grant in Nov 2019. A public ribbon cutting ceremony for the school is planned for Feb 2020.
