Jazz festival names Darin Atwater as artistic director

Darin Atwater, known by many Baltimoreans as the founding artistic director of the Soulful Symphony, has been named artistic director of the historic Monterey Jazz Festival. Atwater’s appointment is historic as only the third artistic director in the organization’s history since its founding in 1958. Atwater, who lives in Baltimore, is also the first African American to hold the position. Atwater’s career has encompassed the roles of artistic director, composer, conductor, pianist, vocalist and cultural advocate.
