Azie Taylor Morton was the first and only African American to serve as the Treasurer of the United States. Appointed by President Jimmy Carter, she held the position from September 12, 1977, to January 20, 1981. Morton’s role as treasurer included overseeing the U.S. Mint, managing government funds, and her signature appearing on all Federal Reserve Notes during her tenure.
