Ex-Cop Who Fatally Shot Breonna Taylor Hired By New Police Department
The man who fired the shot that killed Breonna Taylor is no longer a former officer.According to WLKY, former Louisville Metro Police officer Myles Cosgrove was hired as a sheriff’s deputy in Carroll County last week.Cosgrove was one of the officers who shot Taylor, a 26-year-old Black woman, in a botched, no-knock raid of her Louisville apartment in 2020. According to officials, Cosgrove fired the fatal shot. The ex-LMPD officer is already on active duty in Caroll County.
Carroll County Chief Deputy Rob Miller said the department is aware that “there will be opinions on both sides of the equation” in regard to Cosgrove’s hiring.
When bringing on Cosgrove, the department considered that Cosgrove was following orders when he executed the warrant that killed Taylor, Miller said. They also considered that Kentucky Law Enforcement Council voted to not revoke Cosgrove’s police certification, per the chief deputy.
The department believes that Cosgrove’s experience as an officer and his technical skills will benefit Carroll County.
“We’re going to give him a chance,” Miller said.
The hiring comes after Cosgrove was fired in 2021 by then-interim Chief Yvette Gentry for violating department policies during the deadly raid. In February, a court moved to uphold Cosgrove’s termination.
