Ethnic minorities in Hong Kong take steps to counter long-standing discrimination
Discrimination against ethnic minorities in Hong Kong has been a long-standing problem. The number of complaints lodged in the last decade has increased four-fold in 2020, according to the Equal Opportunities Commission’s latest report. Two-thirds of these cases involved people of South Asian descent. Official statistics show there are roughly 584,000 classified as ethnic minorities in Hong Kong, making up about 8% of Hongkongers. Most of them are from the Philippines, Indonesia — domestic helpers account for more than half the total — and the rest are from South Asia.
