Constitutional Court ruling changes SA politics
The political landscape in South Africa has changed after the Constitutional Court ruled yesterday that independent candidates can now stand for both national and provincial elections without being affiliated to any political party.
The court found that the Electoral Act – in its current form – is unconstitutional.
Originally the New Nation Movement, a non-partisan group and four other independent organisations, lodged an application stating the Electoral Act infringed on the rights of independents, over a year ago.
Tshego Motaung from the Movement says the ruling will increase accountability of public officials.
