And it is shared as we see how the Fourth of July is seen by black (African) Americans, when the 1852 speech questioned what Independence Day and independence means to African Americans. Frederick Douglass (1818 – 1895 (CE)) was an American social reformer, abolitionist, orator, writer, and statesman. After escaping from slavery in Maryland, he became a national leader of the abolitionist movement in Massachusetts and New York, gaining note for his oratory and incisive antislavery writings.
