Black history: Arizona's first African American doctor
Dr. Winston Hackett was a pioneer in healthcare. He may have been born in Texas, but he is a part of Arizona’s history. Dr. Hackett was the first African American doctor in the state. His wife Ayra was a pioneer in her own right. She founded The Arizona Gleam newspaper in 1929. It was the only Black woman-owned-and-ran newspaper in the state at the time.
