Baltimore was home to first Black-owned shipyard in US
Continuing our celebration of Black History Month, here is today’s fact for Tuesday Feb. 7. Baltimore was home to the first Black-owned shipyard in the United States, known as the “Chesapeake Marine Railway and Dry Dock Company.” It was formed and operated by a group of Black community leaders, including Isaac Myers, which is how the former shipyard got part of its new name, the “Frederick Douglass-Isaac Myers Maritime Park and Museum,” at the Inner Harbor.
