As African American studies come under political attack, educators fight back
Politics are back in the classroom and the curriculum for AP African American studies classes hangs in the balance. Changes first came after Florida Governor Ron DeSantis deemed the new course “woke” and “indoctrination,” and barred schools in the state from offering the course.
The company that runs AP courses in the U.S., the College Board, made adjustments to appease DeSantis. But now, they’re facing backlash from a number of activists, advocates and educators — including Khalil Gibran Muhammad, professor at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government. He argues moves from DeSantis only underscore the need for courses like this.
