After Nigeria, Many African Countries Are Recalling J&J Children’s Cough Syrup –
In a growing health concern that has spanned across multiple African countries, Rwanda has joined Nigeria, Kenya, and South Africa in recalling batches of Johnson & Johnson’s children’s cough syrup over safety concerns. This action comes after high levels of diethylene glycol, a toxic substance, were detected in laboratory tests.
The affected batches, manufactured in South Africa, were sold not only in Rwanda but also in Eswatini, Kenya, Tanzania, and Nigeria. This recall was initiated following reports by Nigeria’s health regulator, which first detected the toxin in a batch of Benylin Paediatric Syrup. Both Kenya and Nigeria had previously issued recalls for the same syrup, which is commonly used to treat hay fever and other allergic conditions affecting the upper respiratory tract.
Kenvue, the company that now owns the Benylin brand after a spin-off from Johnson & Johnson last year, has been proactive in addressing the issue. They stated that they are conducting their own assessments and collaborating with health authorities to determine the appropriate course of action. Despite the recall, Kenvue mentioned that their global safety database did not identify any serious adverse events related to any batch of Benylin Paediatric Syrup released between May 2021 and April 2024.
The discovery of diethylene glycol in the cough syrup has raised significant alarm, given its link to the deaths of dozens of children in countries like Gambia, Uzbekistan, and Cameroon since 2022. This situation represents one of the world’s worst waves of poisoning from oral medication.
