African Diaspora through the Americas: Slave cultures across the Americas
Jane Landers, Gertrude Conaway Vanderbilt Professor of History, and Marshall Eakin, Professor of History, team-teach this course designed to offer an overview of the rise of the African slave trade and the subsequent diaspora of Africans through the Americas. Main themes include the differences among European slave systems in the Spanish, Portuguese, English, and French colonies of the Americas and the resulting
varieties of cultural expression and resistance of the enslaved. The course will also introduce the wide variety of evidence now available for studying the African diaspora in the Americas.
The class is part of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Vanderbilt. The non-credit classes are intended for older adults who want to pursue lifelong learning with the stimulus of lectures and discussions in an informal and relaxed environment.
