A Florida College Goes to War With Ron DeSantis
This is an excellent article. Everyone should read it.
It describes how this liberal arts college is built on academic freedom and empowers its students to get an education and not just a certification.
It describes Derek Black, the son of the founder of the white supremacist website Stormfront and his heir apparent, who had an awakening and left that life of hatred behind thanks to the education he received and the people he met at New College.
That kind of transformation is VERY threatening to the right. Desantis wants to make this his next “anti-woke” target by putting a bunch of right wing hacks on its board.
Two of Desantis’ picks worked on Trump’s apoplectic reply to the 1619 Project, The 1776 Report. The hacks who wrote this self plagiarized* a lot of it, which is a nice way of demonstrating their academic virtues.
The 1776 Report quotes Martin Luther King saying that the Declaration of Independence was a promissory note that all men would be treated equally. The report’s authors then allege that this solved inequality and any Civil Rights movement after this is just playing identity politics.
Of course, they INTENTIONALLY do not quote the very next goddamn line in King’s speech where King says that America has defaulted on its promise and written a bad check insofar as African Americans are concerned.
This is part and parcel of the vision these hacks have for New College.
They are promising to “abolish ‘diversity, equity, and inclusion’ and replace it with ‘equality, merit, and colorblindness.'”
Translation? We solved racism already so shut the fuck up, stop talking about it,and let’s praise white people some more.
These people who SAY they don’t want revisionist history are desperate to revise the history of racism out of the textbooks.
The “patriotic” education they want consists of A) We are good so B) America is good and C) America was ALWAYS good, so don’t criticize it.
*can you “self-plagiarize?” Yes. If I hire you to write an original work for me and you hand me something you wrote for someone else, then that is plagiarism. It is unoriginal work that you are pretending is new and that I have the right to use
