LIVE: PM Modi Tells Putin To Pursue Ukraine Peace In Talks | Vantage with Palki Sharma
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin met and shared a hug during a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the 16th BRICS Summit. During the meeting, PM Modi emphasised the importance of resolving conflicts peacefully, referring to the ongoing war in Ukraine. This meeting follows their encounter in Moscow in July, where Modi embraced Putin. But the gesture didn’t go down well with Ukraine, which is in conflict with Russia. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed his “disappointment” over it.
Historically, India’s relationship with Russia has been heavily influenced by arms trade. Whether it was fighter jets, guns, or missiles, India sourced most of its military technology from Russia. But in recent years, this has changed. Between 2009 and 2013, 76% of India’s arms imports came from Russia. Over the last five years, however, that figure has dropped to 36%. While the weapons trade has decreased, oil trade between the two nations has surged. With Russia facing energy export restrictions from the West, it has sold oil to India at discounted rates. Currently, New Delhi buys 1.9 million barrels of Russian oil per day, accounting for 40% of India’s total supply. On Vantage tonight, Palki Sharma decodes the relationship between the two countries.
