African American Philanthropy Summit Highlights: Kevin Clayton

Featured morning speaker: Kevin Clayton (Vice President, Diversity, Inclusion & Engagement, Cleveland Cavaliers)

How Does Diversity, Inclusion and Equity Impact Philanthropy
Are the right people at the table AND do they have a voice in decision-making?

Organizations thrive when they welcome, respect and include people of all backgrounds. Inclusive philanthropy aims to create broader communal involvement, expand the circle of those who participate in shaping decisions, and to center philanthropy in the community, rather than in managerial efficiency and effectiveness.

As vice president of diversity, inclusion & engagement, Kevin Clayton is responsible for developing and leading the D&I strategic plan for all Cleveland Cavalier properties. His approach to diversity & inclusion is grounded in a belief that everyone is part of the D&I landscape. He has successfully used this approach with the Cavs to develop a strategic D&I business plan that has delivered quantitative and qualitative results affecting representation of the workforce, the culture of the workplace, revenue from the marketplace, authentic community and fan engagement.

Clayton is also the board chair for CHC: Creating Healthier Communities, a national health organization that for more than 65 years has been creating stronger, healthier communities by building capacity for nonprofits by raising awareness, amplifying their message, and driving more funds and supporters to their cause.

Clayton has held D&I and leadership positions at Bon Secours Mercy Health, JumpBall LLC, The United States Tennis Association, the American Cancer Society and Russell Corporation.

Kevin is a native of Cleveland, Ohio. He has four daughters, a granddaughter and grandson. He is an alum of North Carolina Central University and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in business administration and psychology from Wilmington College, where he was a co-captain and student athlete on the basketball team.
