Africatown is a historic community in Mobile, Alabama, USA. It was founded by the last known shipment of enslaved Africans to the United States in 1860, aboard the Clotilda, despite the transatlantic slave trade being illegal at that time. The captives were brought by Timothy Meaher, a wealthy businessman. After the Civil War and emancipation, some of the freed Africans settled in the area, forming Africatown. It has a rich cultural heritage and is significant in African American history. Efforts have been made to preserve its history and promote awareness of its importance in American history.
