The government hoped the rector family would not be able to afford the taxes and would lose the land. Just as Sarah rector and her family started to lose hope they were approached by the standard oil company. They asked if the rectors would allow them to survey the land. The rector family with nothing to lose of course agreed. The standard oil company found oil reserves on sarahs land and immediately started producing 2500 barrels of oil per month. The revenue from this discovery would make sarah rector a millionaire at only 12 years old.
