Black History Month | First African American Family in Phoenix and the Black Theatre Troupe

Mary Green is recognized as the first African American to settle in Phoenix in 1868. She was born a slave but made Arizona home as a free woman. Her granddaughter and former City of Phoenix employee, Helen K. Mason was also a trailblazer, starting the Black Theatre Troupe in 1970, to establish the black community and to promote cultural diversity.
