A spiritual is a type of devotional song that is frequently associated with the enslavement of African Americans in the American South. The songs became increasingly popular in the late eighteenth century, up until the abolition of legalized slavery in the 1860s. The African American spiritual, also known as the Negro Spiritual, is one of the most popular and influential genres of American folk music.
“Swing low, dear chariot,” by Wallis Willis, and “Deep down in my heart” are two well-known spirituals. The word “spiritual” comes from Ephesians 5:19, which says, “speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual melodies, singing and making music in your heart to the Lord.”
