A new country is emerging in the middle of Africa that could become the first African superpower: the East African Federation, a union of seven states: Burundi, DR Congo, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda.

This superstate would be the largest country in Africa, ahead of Algeria, and the seventh largest country in the world, ahead of India but behind Australia. Its capital would be Arusha in Tanzania, and with 312 million inhabitants, the federation would be the fourth most populous country after the United States.

But it would also be a relatively poor state, with a GDP of $325 billion, making it only the fourth largest economy on the continent behind Nigeria, Egypt, and South Africa, despite having by far the most inhabitants.

But there are other difficulties that stand in the way of federation. Africa is already a diverse continent, and these seven countries are no different, so it could be very difficult to unite all these different interests into a single state.
