PGC Black Business History | Smith’s Barbershop

Smith’s Barbershop’s tale is ingrained in the DNA of Prince George’s County history.

Raymond Smith’s family has been Prince Georgian’s for centuries, descended from 18th-century slaves who labored on the North Hampton (Lake Arbor) plantation. Smith even grew up on the farm, where he learned and practiced his hair-cutting skills around the community.

Little did he know that his trade would send him to the Navy and back to a segregated county to establish his shop brick by brick, which has stood for over 70 years and has even expanded with his children.

Join Lori Valentine, our Vice President of Policy and Public Relations, and the Smith Children, as they tell the story of Smith’s Barbershop in Glenarden.
