The New African Diaspora: Intersection of Race, Identity, and Culture



It is estimated that sub-Saharan African population in the US increased by 52% between 2010 and 2018, making this group a rapidly growing immigrant population. As with past migrations and integration of immigrant populations in the US, questions about identity, assimilation and acculturation also come into focus. These questions, however, are further complicated with the history of racial discrimination of people of color in the US. Panelists will examine questions of identity, race and culture among the new African Diasporas, and the implications for mapping the way forward in Black and Brown bodies experiences in contemporary America.
