Maryland Mom Gets $275K For 5-Year-Olds Detainment By Cops | Roland Martin
A Montgomery County, Maryland, parent agrees to a $275,000 settlement with the county over her young child’s detainment by police after he walked away from school two years ago.
Shanta Grant’s child left East Silver Spring Elementary School on Jan. 14, 2020. Police officers Dionne Holliday and Kevin Christmon found the boy, who was five at the time, about two-tenths of a mile away from the school.
Grant’s lawsuit accused police of being verbally abusive and threatening toward her child. The officers put a handcuff on the boy, trying to scare him straight once he was taken back to school. Montgomery County’s Self-Insurance Fund and the Board of Education paid out the settlement.
