First two black Africans to participate in the Olympics in 1904 honored
The first two black Africans to participate in the Olympics in 1904, Len Taunyane and Jan Mashiane from South Africa have been honored with sculptures at the Kedar Heritage Lodge in Rustenburg in the North West.
Their participation in the olympics held in the United States is unique in the sense that the two were not professional athletes, but soldiers who were running against thirty professional athletes.
Although the pair made remarkable history, their achievements have largely been forgotten.
