First African American Fire Chief remembered during Black History Month of the 150th Year of DCFD



DC’s Bravest remember and honor the trailblazers that set new precedents, like Fire Chief Burton Johnson, DC’s first African American Fire Chief, who led the Department from 1973 – 1978. He got his start in 1943 at Engine 4, the first all black fire house, which today, is dedicated to him.
