Senegal: Protesters rally in support of Malian people amid ECOWAS sanctions

Protesters including Malians living in Senegal held a rally in Dakar in support of Mali and the Malian people following the introduction of sanctions to the country by ECOWAS.

“I came here to support the Malian people, support that we have seen everywhere in Africa and in the diaspora, following this decision that we found unfair,” said Senegalese protester Jean-Charles.
“Faced with these decisions, these sanctions which are unjust, illegal, and moreover, disproportionate and unreasonable, it will simply take unity,” explained Malian protester Moussa Traore.

Following the introduction of sanctions by ECOWAS (Economic Community of West African States) on the West African country, several protests have been held in Africa and abroad to denounce the move.

The sanctions come in response to Malian military leaders’ desire to postpone elections until 2025. Mali’s military ruler Assimi Goita has criticised the sanctions and decided to close its land borders with neighbouring ECOWAS member countries.

This is why we came here, and we are counting on the Teranga (Senegalese principle) of the Senegalese people, to speak to its president His Excellency Macky Sakk so that he can plead on behalf of Mali with his peers, so that we can open the borders. and lift the sanctions.”

And what the people want is for the transition to last a little to carry out the reforms and then move towards credible and transparent elections.”
