African American painters and artists experience a very significant lack of mainstream attention which results in their work being undervalued and their talents being underappreciated. And although there have been some record-breaking sales at the art auction houses in the past 10 years for a select few black artists, a more detailed look reveals that there is indeed an unbalanced market… and one that is much smaller in both value and volume than what these headlines suggest. The popular but false perception that private collectors, wall street, and museums are all of sudden rushing to scoop up the work of African American artists has been framed by such high-profile sales as Jean Michel Basquiat or Kerry James Marshall. But the real numbers and true reality is that only 1.2% of African American artwork is actually bought in the global art auction market that has demonstrated a worth of over $180 billion in the past 10 years.

Yes… we are moving in the right direction but if we remove the winning bids for Basquiat … who accounts for 77% of the $2.2 billion spent on black art in the past decade… the progress is much less than one would imagine.

And putting aside the acquisitions of private collectors, there are wide disparities on the museum sides as well. There are *very very* few marquee exhibitions that our Museums have dedicated to African American artists.

All that said, we want to help celebrate our black artists and the black artist community in this video where we highlight those who are able to garner high prices at art auctions for their work. We will also illuminate a handful of other unsung artists who have made their mark on the American Art industry, in their own style and their own way.
