Janice Bryant Howroyd becomes first African American woman to run a billion-dollar business
Janice Bryant Howroyd, 65, has become the first black woman to run a billion-dollar business. Howroyd is the founder and CEO of Act 1 Group, an employment agency. Black Enterprise magazine said her business produces more than $1 billion in annual revenue. Howroyd grew up in Tarboro, N.C., with ten siblings. She opened Act 1 in Beverly Hills in 1978, growing by good word of mouth.
