For many in the African American community, roller skating may bring to mind grade school birthday parties or Friday night or weekend skate parties with your teenage friends. Then there are those of us who immersed ourselves into the skating culture as adults who became addicted to the thunder-like sounds of the hundreds of roller skates rhythmically gliding over the smooth floors of the popular roller rink. Whatever the case may be, there is no denying that there is strong connection between black communities and roller skating as the rinks have served as both a refuge and a stage for self expression.

The focus of this video is to help shine a light on the handful of black owned skating rinks across the nation. We also want to feature the African American roller skating culture and the gliding stalwarts who are trying to keep it alive.
